How do law firms deal with client conflicts?

There is nothing more stressful for a lawyer then discovering a client conflict involving a high-paying client in a large law firms. But this situation is not impossible to deal with. In fact, it is very common for large law firms to represent multiple clients with adverse interests.

Large law firms anticipate these issues by using a conflict checking system when screening new clients and cases that helps to identify potential conflicts of interest. It is obviously best to identify potential conflicts before they turn into an insolvable problem.

When conflicts are unavoidable, large law firms can use ethical walls to separate lawyers who represent clients that have conflicts. An ethical wall involves the use of a set of procedures to prevent confidential information being dissipated between different areas of the firm.
